Nietzsche, Psychoanalysis and Feminism: Luce Irigaray, Sigridur Thorgeirsdottir and Christine Battersby, 25 - 26 November 2016, London

25 November - 26 November 2016

Speaker(s): Luce Irigaray, Sigridur Thorgeirsdottir and Christine Battersby

The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars working on Nietzsche, psychoanalysis, and feminism. Nietzsche writes that he is ‘the first psychologist of the eternal feminine' and that psychology is ‘now again the path to the fundamental problems'. He also writes about the love relationships and the gender roles of women and men, stating that ‘it is man who creates for himself the image of woman, and woman forms herself according to this image'. It is not surprising then that Nietzsche's thinking has influenced and inspired both psychoanalytic and feminist thinkers.

Nietzsche makes a considerable effort in The Gay Science to convince the reader that erotic love, as the expression of an instinct or drive, is not a ‘good' to be esteemed, but is rather an egoistic need that gains surplus value. He suggests that the drives that underlie love are tyrannical and possessive and it is only through their cultural articulations that love comes to be viewed with a sense of splendour or beauty. Nietzsche also suggests that the differences between the genders are a product of instinctual forces that cause men and women to love distinctively and, as such, we cannot expect egalitarian reciprocity in love relationships.

Nietzsche's writings reveal a thinker who is reflecting on the differences and inequalities between the genders without explicitly suggesting any solutions. As such, we may ask whether Nietzsche can approach the problem of sex/gender with the same critical distance that he suggests is necessary for a re-evaluation of values. Is the man/woman distinction ‘a faith in opposite values' that he is unable to overcome?

This conference seeks to think about the contributions and limits of Nietzsche's writings on sex/gender, self-overcoming, and love and then move beyond him. By exploring the connections between Nietzsche, psychoanalysis, and feminism we will return to feminist problems in the philosophical and psychoanalytic canons and ask how they remain important today.

The Dislocated Subject: Conference, 21 - 22 October 2016, Freud Museum Vienna

21 October, 8 p.m. – Keynote Lecture by Paolo Fabbri
22 October, 9.30 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Panel Talks

The Sigmund Freud Museum’s 2016 autumn conference is devoted to the theme of “new subjectivity”. In a world which is dominated by new ways of communication, by technology that subverts the perception of the body, by the new organisations of the family and groups and by global violence, we are witnessing an overflowing of the subject. The cult of the body and of youth, the desire to procreate also without the shared will of the couple, the lack of a collective conscience, etc. tell us about a “dislocated” subject’.

The conference which opens with the keynote lecture „Yes, we zombies can“ by the Italian semiologist Paolo Fabbri, discusses two aspects of this dislocation of the subject: 1) an “embodied dislocation”, in which the subject, identified with the physical body, reacts by altering this location and technically modifying its appearance or functions, and 2) “disembodied dislocation”, where the subject relocates to a non-physical world of chatrooms, avatars and self-representations within a virtual, globalised reality.

‘Geographies of Psychoanalysis’

Psychoanalysis has been expanding in countries very distant from the historical psychoanalytical culture. The answers to our new realities created by globalization, technological progess and new forms of communication are different from country to country, thus, psychoanalysis has to provide different answers. It is no longer only a question of dialogue with other disciplines, but one of establishing a comparison between different anthropological positions. We have to understand whether psychoanalytical concepts are universal and if its therapeutical methodology is effective in different countries worldwide.

The work of the International Research Group ‘Geographies of Psychoanalysis’, which started a few years ago by a number of the Italian Psychoanalytical Society journal‘Psiche’ (n.1/2008) under the direction of Lorena Preta, brings together the different experiences of psychoanalysts living and working in a variety of realities and cultures.

Any Body, Anybody – The Matter of the Unconscious - 9th Meeting of the SIPP-ISPP

November 9-12, 2016, at the New School for Social Research, New York.

With this title, we invite reflections on the body and the materiality of the unconscious. How does psychoanalysis help us think about how bodies become laden with and deprived of identity in a social and political space? The term “Anybody” also asks us to think about how the unconscious is not bound to a known identity but rather emerges from and belongs to a “nobody” that is nevertheless material; the phrase “Any body,” conjures up the psychic ambiguities subtending the way sexuality affects every body including but not limited to trans-sexual bodies. This conference also offers us an opportunity to think about how the targets of recent acts of terrorism are construed as “anybodies” and/or “nobodies.”
